FEATURED PROJECT

Sunrise rim

IN DEPTH SOLUTIONS, BOISE ID
Picture
This months featured project is entitled Sunrise Rim.  It was created in conjunction with two other pieces for a company named In Depth Solutions in Boise, Idaho.

They contacted me because they wanted a way to welcome back their staff who have been working at home for the past two years due to the pandemic.  Jennifer, the President of In-Depth Solutions, asked me to design a piece that created flow from their entrance to their break room and waiting area.  She wanted to highlight the surrounding geographical elements that can be seen from their windows, such as the canal filled with geese, the foothills, and of course the sunrise.  She also wanted to create an immersive experience where the viewer felt as if they were in the piece, looking out over the river and hills.

I began by designing a hallway runner (not featured here) of a flowing river and fish that pulls the viewer from the entrance of the office suites into the larger room shown below.  This piece also utilized the sunlight and sky pattern that appears in the great room.  In addition, I created a large chalk board wall bordered by flowers where the team can interact with one another.

Then I designed this three piece spread which focuses in the movement of air, light and water.  I incorporated local flora and fauna, fish with my signature Shoshone design, and migrating geese.

Below are pictures of the process:  the three pieces took 175 hours and sixteen days to complete. The largest of these three pieces is highlighted below.

First I lay out a scaled grid that matches with my digital sketch. You can see my faint chalk drawings here which have been applied using a projector.

I lay out the largest elements first to give myself a reference point for the mountains river and clouds.

Refining lines and recoating colors to ensure full saturation. This part of the process takes me nearly as long as laying out the design.

Word on the street

testimonials
“Odessa possesses that certain unquantifiable “thing” that some artists have.  That ability to not just beautiful a given space but to pull something out of the location itself in the process.  When she has completed a project, it seems difficult to imagine it otherwise or even wish to do so.”
