Making-of’s

From inception to completion

Sunrise rim

IN DEPTH SOLUTIONS, BOISE ID
Picture
This months featured project is entitled Sunrise Rim.  It was created in conjunction with two other pieces for a company named In Depth Solutions in Boise, Idaho.

They contacted me because they wanted a way to welcome back their staff who have been working at home for the past two years due to the pandemic.  Jennifer, the President of In-Depth Solutions, asked me to design a piece that created flow from their entrance to their break room and waiting area.  She wanted to highlight the surrounding geographical elements that can be seen from their windows, such as the canal filled with geese, the foothills, and of course the sunrise.  She also wanted to create an immersive experience where the viewer felt as if they were in the piece, looking out over the river and hills.

I began by designing a hallway runner (not featured here) of a flowing river and fish that pulls the viewer from the entrance of the office suites into the larger room shown below.  This piece also utilized the sunlight and sky pattern that appears in the great room.  In addition, I created a large chalk board wall bordered by flowers where the team can interact with one another.

Then I designed this three piece spread which focuses in the movement of air, light and water.  I incorporated local flora and fauna, fish with my signature Shoshone design, and migrating geese.

Below are pictures of the process:  the three pieces took 175 hours and sixteen days to complete. The largest of these three pieces is highlighted below.

First I lay out a scaled grid that matches with my digital sketch. You can see my faint chalk drawings here which have been applied using a projector.
Picture
I lay out the largest elements first to give myself a reference point for the mountains river and clouds.
Picture
Now I pull the sunrise across the adjoining walls
Picture
Refining lines and recoating colors to ensure full saturation. This part of the process takes me nearly as long as laying out the design.

FEATURED PROJECT

Leslie gulch.

Residential Commission
Picture
This months featured project is a 200 square foot rendition of the Leslie Gulch area for a residential garden patio in Boise, Idaho.

This is one of my favorite projects to date because it was an opportunity to experiment with a new landscape, highlighting the beauty of light play off of rock formations.

I worked closely with this family, pouring over photographs of their vacations and hiking adventures to determine the feel of the environment that resonates with them.  From there I created a series of sketches that I felt embodied these moods until I hit on  a design they loved!.

This piece is a great example of how murals are not only for commercial environments.  They also being a unique beauty to residential spaces as well and a pop of color to the neighborhood!
Picture
It all starts with a blank wall. The beauty of this brick wall is that it already provides a grid for the mural.
Picture
From here I start to lay out the basic shapes of the rocks against the sky.
Picture
Then I begin to fill in the larger shapes, including juniper bushes and color blocks.
Picture
Then the sky and water begin to take shape
Picture
I add my signature fish for good measure, loosely based on local Shoshone imagery
Picture
And some birds

Until finallly we have this completed accent wall! Coming in at 90 hours of on site painting, 26 colors and 200 square feet.
FEATURED PROJECT

North End Nursery

Picture
This months featured project is the massive, larger than life canvas of North End Organic Nursery on Chinden Blvd. in Garden City, Idaho.

Lyndsay and I have worked closely together to turn this 3,000 square foot wall into a platform to "Bring the Garden Back to Garden City'.

I was given full creative license to design a mural featuring pollinators and local flora.  I am in love with the wings on dragonflies and butterflies and decide to create a graphic version of these creatures along with poppies, lupine, bumblebees and orchids.  I started by choosing a base color or 'cloud' that would blend with the bluebird sky on clear blue days, creating an almost floating effect for the mural elements.  We finished this piece with a newly designed logo by Eric Wiley.

This project is my largest undertaking to date and has easily been the most rewarding in terms of a sense of accomplishment.  I was able to bring in my good friend, Scott Hameister, to assist with application.  At writing, we are still one week away from completing the details on this beast, but it is rapidly coming together in time for winter storms.

I cannot properly express how gratifying it has been to hear the community response to our beautification of their daily commute down Chinden.  It is truly an honor to positively impact my community just by doing what I love.

Drop by 7 days a week to check out this new mural and grab a coffee from the cute little coffee bar tucked inside of North End Nursery's Garden City location at 3777 W Chinden Blvd, in Garden City ID.

It all starts with a sketch. I then take this sketch, superimpose a grid, then recreate the grid on the large brick wall of the building itself.
Picture
Sketching out the design can draw quite the crowd of budding artists
Picture
As the elements begin to come together, the environment begins to integrate with the design
Picture
Even the local fauna gets involved..
Picture
Work begins on the logo installation
Picture
Now we add the tag for Garden City to create a sense of place

With one week to go, I'm beginning detail work on leaves and flowers
FEATURED PROJECT

SOL NUTRITION

www.facebook.com/SolNutrition208/
Picture
This months featured project is SOL Nutrition Smoothie and Juice Bar in Meridian!

Sunne and I have been working together on various projects for nearly a year.  First it was Elevate Nutrition, featuring a doodle art social media wall, and most recently this piece at SOL.

We began with her logo, designed by her very talented sister Rylee Dunn.  We wanted to create a piece that featured SOL's logo but that also went beyond the boundaries of that logo to create an organic, energetic sense of space.

This project went through a number of transformations, both of size and concept.  We finally arrived at a small (but large; 12x16 feet at its largest point) framed version of our original design.  And of course we had to add some sparkle!  I found a great glitter additive by Hemway that mixes directly into the paint itself.  The included buffing pad revealed thousands of brilliant sparkles, adding a gorgeous dimension to the sunrays central to this mural.

In their final stages of construction, you can soon visit SOL in person at 2845 E Overland Road in Meridian!

The sketch we decided upon is gridded out and ready to begin the color selection process.
Picture
Now I lay out all the potential color swatches in natural light. This way I can choose not only colors compatible with the sketch but also those that work well with one another.
Picture
My first time working in the space. Its one big empty wall taped. There's nothing quite like an empty canvas.
Picture
Now I start taping off the larger shapes.
Picture
I fill in the bigger swatches of color then block out the area the logo will be
Picture
Now I fill in the space the logo will be and continue building elements around it until....
Picture
The mural is complete! With sparkle inside the inner logo, catching the light in a way my camera couldn't. This piece is an impressive 12 feet tall and 16 feet wide at its widest point.
FEATURED PROJECT

coned pizza

Picture
This months featured project is Coned! Pizza in Meridian

They were looking for a way to spruce up their current brick and morter at 2976 E Overland Rd in Meridian, ID.  These small strip mall locations can be difficult to personalize, but I am finding that a mural is the perfect way to really make the space unique and memorable without taking up much needed floor space.

I am so excited about how this is turning out.  I am using a really cool method to create this starburst background.  It utilizes two different paints of the same color but a different sheen.  This makes it appear like there are two different shades of black creating the effect when it is really just a flat and a satin sheen which catch the light in different ways.  In some lights there appears to be an almost velvety texture to the flat paint and in others the color differences almost completely disappear!

The image itself is showcasing the unique process of creating a 'pizza cone'; these delightful handheld pizza meals, personalized to suit your topping preferences.  I'm using a pop art style here which really spices up the energy of the restaurant and the cutting edge nature of the process itself.

Below are pictures of the process:  from sketches on paper to sketches on the wall and finally the finished product!

This was such a fun and challenging project!  Stay tuned for more pieces at this location.

Check out Coned!'s new location at 103 N 10th St in Boise, ID.

The sketch decided upon by my clients
Picture
Now I enter it into Procreate and color it in to create an overlay on their existing wall. This allows the client to visualize the final mural before we begin
Picture
With the help of my ever patient boyfriend (bribed by a Big Juds burger from next door) we meticulously lay out the tape lines to create this starburst pattern
Picture
And how pretty it is! Catching the light from different angles.
Picture
Next I lay out tape lines to capture the layout of the cone and ensure the proportions are still what I want in the space.
